When suddenly forced to reevaluate my life, I decided it was time to go after my dreams and serve a bigger purpose. While I found that facing overwhelming odds tends to bring out the best in oneself, beating them to become a REALTOR®was just a prelude.
In 2015, I became a licensed REALTOR®and set about helping others build their legacies. Coming from a successful marketing and business career, this was quite a pivot, but it was one motivated by circumstances that had me reevaluating what I truly wished to achieve in my life.
After knee surgery in 2014, I had a health scare that was a little too close for comfort.Listening to a doctor tell me I might not make it was the last thing I expected.At first, all I could think of was, “But I have not accomplished anything yet!”Mainly because although I had done well in my career up to that point, I realized all I would leave my husband, Kevin, with was a life insurance policy and a few memories. So, after the initial shock wore off, I resolved not to let misfortune bury me. I was determined to beat this, set truly fulfilling goals, and knock them down one at a time.
My family has always defied odds. My paternal grandfather was the first Black OperationsManager for all of Newark airport in New Jersey.
My maternal grandfather was a Black man who owned a gas, service, and towing station, and my mother won New Jersey’s“Businesswoman of the Year”award for four years.I suppose recovery marked my turn to continue this tradition of overcoming obstacles.
So,I committed to doing all I could to improve my health, including holistic remedies. Consequently, my progress defied my doctor’s dire predictions, and I made it past that first difficult month to a complete and entirely unprecedented recovery.
Within the next year, I began pursuing everything I wanted to do, starting with real estate.I’ve had an interest in generational wealth since childhood. However, up to that point,I had never had the opportunity to make it a reality for my family. But what I did have were inspirations to draw from, like my mother who established an extremely successful hair and nail salon in New Jersey without knowing a soul when she moved there.
While becoming a REALTOR®, I noticed a striking scarcity ofBlack and Brown homeowners in the community, which motivated me to explore why. Today, as a REALTOR®, I have made it my mission to ensure everyone, especially underprivileged families, receive the crucial information they need to begin building wealth through real estate. I firmly believe that homeownership is a right everyone deserves.
I find one of the best parts of being a REALTOR®to be simply sharing everything I know with others. I love understanding someone’s “why” and helping them take things to the next level. It’s actually quite a challenge for me not to share often-hidden secrets, even if I’m not someone’s chosen agent. I think that’s because serving specifically as someone’s REALTOR®is immaterial; what matters is making a difference.
I could not have gotten here without my husband,Kevin, my biggest support and cheerleader throughout my journey. When I’m not closing deals, I like visiting home design stores with him and analyzing our investment portfolio. I also enjoy playing tennis, spending time with my daughter, Nova, and bonding with family. I am most thankful for these moments with my loved ones.
After losing my precious daughter, Royal Grace Olivia, at age3 in May 2022, I resolved to ensure Royal’s grace is displayed in my life, sharing what it means to live life with humility, gratefulness, and kindness toward all.
This journey taught me that helping others defy odds and create better futures is my passion because, as I realized years ago and even more now, tomorrow is never promised.
